A bit of history...
Shell has a long history of innovation, providing fuels for the aviation industry spanning more than a century:
- In 1909, Shell supplied the fuel required for the first Channel crossing by plane between France and England.
- In 1919, Shell participated in the first transatlantic flight.
- In 1976, Shell provided the fuel and lubricants for the first commercial flight of British Airways' Concorde between London and Bahrain.
- In 1989, Shell refuelled the Boeing 747 of the Australian airline Qantas for the first ever non-stop flight between London and Australia.
- In October 2009, Qatar Airways completed the first commercial passenger flight between London Gatwick Airport and Doha using Shell fuel produced from natural gas.
- In 2013, Shell announced the development of a new unleaded petrol, the Avgas 100 and 100LL, for aircraft with piston engines.
